An Artist???

I have a friend. Always when he "sees" me he greets me: Dear Artist! That makes me think... Am I an artist?
It is very difficult to say who is an artist and who is not. There are good painters that are not artists and there are bad painters that are artists.

Am I an artist? A huge question.... because I am not even able to define what is Art!
What I know for sure is that I am a painter. Being a painter means to give a visual form to my feelings. To try to create an image that has its own life....maybe if I succeed in this: creating an image which has a life itself... an existence of its own.... maybe just in that moment I could be an artist... what do you think?

a mi me cuesta autonombrarme artista... creo que un artista de verdad va más allá del dominio de una sola disciplina (como es la pintura) yo siempre he tenido inquietud, he incluso he probado varias ramas del arte... pero nombrarme artista lo veo aun lejano.

aunque elena siempre me ha dicho que si no lo asumo no me lo voy a acabar de creer, y que tengo que creer que lo soy para llegar a serlo. suena confuso, pero en cierto modo me da sentido.

espero que llegue el día en que nos presentemos como artistas sin tener dudas internas.

... por cierto, creo que te voy a fusilar la pregunta :) con su respectivo link.

Capisco il tuo dilemma, ma, se posso dare anch'io il mio piccolo contributo, la parola 'artista' m'imbarazza e quasi m'irrita, al punto che, per fugare ogni dubbio, io dico senz'altro di non esserlo. Perché? Non so spiegarlo in due parole, ma non mi piace costringere qualcuno nei limiti stretti di una definizione. Ci sono 'artisti' che mi aprono a mondi meravigliosi e vasti, altri che non mi dicon nulla. Ci sarà una differenza, no :)) ?

No estoy de acuerdo con lo que dices que para ser un artista uno debe estar en otras ramas del arte. Me vienen a la mente nombres enormes que "solo" se dedicaron a un arte: Schiele, Van Gogh, Mozart, García Marquez... otras disciplinas como música, literatura, danza nos enriquecen, pero no te convierten en artista.

Tampoco concuerdo con lo que dice tu hermana Elena.

Lawrence Olivier dijo una frase preciosa:

"If you're an artist, you've got to prove it."

Sono d'accordo con te. Un pittore puó aprirti il cuore con la sua pittura, tanto da poterlo chiamare artista, Ció implica che oltrepassa l'ordinario. Ma sarebbe ingannevole affinché quella persona dica, "io sono un artista", una volta chiesta che cosa fa per guadagnarsi la vita..... Ben migliore é lasciare ad altri il chiamarlo artista.

As you said, huge question! Michel Angelo was an artist, Leonardo was an artist, Beethoven was an artist, nobody can say no to this point. But Frida Kahlo, do you consider her an artist? If you look at her painting in a formal way, she wasn't a good painter, but we can agree that her paintings now have its own personality. She transmitted her pain through her paintings. But are her paintings artistic? I am not sure. But she is considered an artist.
On the other hand, Leonardo was exceptional, but besides him, I can't really remember an artist that could create an image which has a life itself, do you? Hasn't Picasso been looking for "the" painting all his entire life? The famous painting "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon", can you think of them without thinking of Picasso? Is that painting really beyond Picasso? I am confused.

Regarding painting I found so many ARTISTS! But I do think that not always an artist makes art.... yes, not all the works an artist does are while he/she is enlighted. You know I love E. Schiele... and for me almost all his paintings are alive and do touch me in a very deeply way, but there are some that although they are Schieles, they don't touch me at all....Once I was "flying" with a Rubens! I don't like Rubens very much, although I consider him a great painter...but with that particular work of art, that Rubens made me fly!
Frida was in my opinion a bad painter, but yes she was an artist.... when you see her paintings you may feel the pain.
Let me tell you a secret: I am also very much confused.

¡Gran pregunta! Yo también difiero de NOR en el punto de manejar varias disciplinas. Leonardo lo hizo, pero ¿quién como él? Al contrario, me parece que el dispersarse en varias disciplinas impide el enfocarse y trabajar en lo que realmente nos puede llevar a ser un artista. Para serlo hay que trabajar y muy duro. Hay que hacer mucha obra, no se llega a artista en pocos años y aún cuando exista el talento innato, si éste no se conjunta con práctica y más práctica, con aciertos y tropezones, con curiosidad y con imaginación, no creo que se llegue a artista. Aún Mozart, quien podía componer a temprana edad, no fue considerado artista en este tiempo, sino prodigio y por otro lado, no me lo imagino haciendo esculturas! Así como tampoco Picasso incursionó nunca en la música ni mucho menos Van Gogh intentó asumirse como escritor en sus cartas a Teo.
En fin, como dicen, puntos de vista.

creo que uno como creador es el menos indicado para etiquetarse como artista... bueno, almenos algunos no logramos asumirnos como tales, y asi ha sido en muchos casos en la historia del arte... creen que van gogh se asumia artista? por supuesto que no, de verdad no lo creia, solo hacia su trabajo lo mejor posible.

y tambien creo que el termino es amplisimo y se presta a muchas interpretaciones, a mi en particular me disgustan las definiciones, son muy rigidas... pero aun asi PARA MI el concepto artista es algo mas universal en las artes, pero con ello por supuesto que no niego a los grandes artistas de las diferentes disciplinas (como los que ya han mencionado) ellos eran genios!... es solo que PARA MI es hablar de un artista es algo mas vasto... algo que casi toda el cielo... como leonardo o miguel angel.

en fin, es mi opinion y es una maravilla que haya opiniones diversas, si no cómo crecería uno?

todos tenemos un artista dentro, enfocado en distintas disciplinas y cada uno trabaja en mejorar la suya o superarce dia con dia. No se si Van Gogh se sentia o no artista, lo que se es, que ponia todo su talento en plasmar en pedazos de papel o telas lo que para el era arte, lo que a el lo hacian sentirse VIVO ,realizado . con idas y venidas con paletas transformadas, con pinceladas inquietantes, con sepias llenos de sentimientos....y asi, cada uno se encuentra frente a una tela , piedra , placa, papel etc etc.......plasmando un sentimiento interior, compartiendolo o no con el mundo exterior.
asi uno crece , se realiza ..... vive.

Tu pregunta, Odette, me dejó pensando y sigo pensando. Tampoco concuerdo con Natacha en eso de que todos llevamos un artista dentro... ¡al menos yo no! De cualquier modo reflexiono sobre los comentarios y pienso por ejemplo en Andy Warhol. ¿Llevar las latas de sopa Campbell a un lienzo es arte? Y por otro lado pienso nuevamente en Frida, ¿era un artista? ¿sus pinturas son obras de arte? No sé.

Es que es LA PREGUNTA!

Se dice que Arte es lo que te conmociona, lo que te produce una fuerte sensación emotiva (positiva o negativa). Supongo que en la época en que Warhol llevo objetos banales a un museo para sacralizarlos eso produjo un shock en muchos y de ahí que se considerase arte...

Ahora tras tanto arte conceptual, hay algo aún que nos conmocione?

Creo que tus pinturas, sobre cuerpos humanos femeninos, con sus redondeces y su sensualidad muchas veces contenida, me provoca una emoción positiva. Entonces, debe ser Arte, por lo tanto, si lo que haces es Arte, eres Artista!

This weekend I went twice to the Royal Academy of Arts to the talks of Mexican Architects.  The first talk on Saturday was by architect Michel Rojkind. It was amazing, I liked very much the friendly and social approach to all of his projects, they are quite innovative and he thinks of people.  He is an excellent story teller and all the public was captured by his talk. He is a people person, and he reflects that in his architecture... the project that impact me the most was the on-site extension of la Cineteca Nacional. I loved this place since I was very young and used to live in Satélite; as I am a film lover remember driving every weekend there. Later I was lucky enough to live in Coyoacan so I travelled there by bike.  I was very impressed by the fact that Rojkind's project involves the whole area of the Cineteca, he includes the Archives in his plan and leaves the old Cineteca building untouched, giving tribute to the history of this old buildi...

  13 years ago I took a leap of faith and came with my family to London.  I thought it was going to be easy. It was not. I thought that because during my youth I lived in another country, and it was one of the best experiences in my life. That other country was Germany, and since then I longed for Europe, well I confess I still do… because you should know, England is not Europe. Of course this is my very personal view. I was born in Mexico City, a vibrant and chaotic city. Mexico is a surreal beautiful country. When you are abroad you worth it even more.
