Happy Water Tiger year 2022


Today it is the new solar Chinese year. The usual big celebrations were cancelled this year, but I plan to go to China Town this weekend to celebrate anyway.

Time for Chinese is not linear but circular. 

I love this concept (other advanced cultures like the Mayans had this same conception of time too). It is important to recognise those patterns in the past to learn from our mistakes and advance into the future.  I am looking at these models in my life as well. 
When I was 12 years old I had the amazing opportunity to be 2 months in China.  On that occasion Mao Tse Tung was still ruling. China has changed a lot since then... me too. Since that encounter I have not been back to China, but last year I immersed myself again in this ancient culture. Technology allowed me to contact masters from all over the world and start learning a little bit of this incredible knowledge.

It is interesting to see how a chain of things get you to another point in your life when you never even expect it. 

My art had a 180 degree shift when I discover the Ginkgo Biloba tree, which become my source of inspiration some years ago. The Ginkgo is nowadays native to China. So this fact lead me to start looking at this culture and last year due to some artist block I took the leap into this knowledge. 

Happy new year for all of you and thanks for reading my blog again. 

PS: It took me 9 years to pick up the pen again. (My last writing was from 2013, when unforgettable Tia Tere passed away in Barcelona)

This weekend I went twice to the Royal Academy of Arts to the talks of Mexican Architects.  The first talk on Saturday was by architect Michel Rojkind. It was amazing, I liked very much the friendly and social approach to all of his projects, they are quite innovative and he thinks of people.  He is an excellent story teller and all the public was captured by his talk. He is a people person, and he reflects that in his architecture... the project that impact me the most was the on-site extension of la Cineteca Nacional. I loved this place since I was very young and used to live in Satélite; as I am a film lover remember driving every weekend there. Later I was lucky enough to live in Coyoacan so I travelled there by bike.  I was very impressed by the fact that Rojkind's project involves the whole area of the Cineteca, he includes the Archives in his plan and leaves the old Cineteca building untouched, giving tribute to the history of this old buildi...

A leap of faith

  13 years ago I took a leap of faith and came with my family to London.  I thought it was going to be easy. It was not. I thought that because during my youth I lived in another country, and it was one of the best experiences in my life. That other country was Germany, and since then I longed for Europe, well I confess I still do… because you should know, England is not Europe. Of course this is my very personal view. I was born in Mexico City, a vibrant and chaotic city. Mexico is a surreal beautiful country. When you are abroad you worth it even more. You might wondered then, why did we decide to leave Mexico?  Well, we decided to leave Mexico because my country was becoming very insecure. It was during president Calderon’s failed drug war.
